Ole Miss Comes up Short at Auburn, Starts Looking for New Coach

The Ole Miss Rebels came up short against No. 12 Auburn 44-23 over on the Plains.

Shortly after the loss, UM posted a job listing for a new head coach, signaling that Matt Luke’s days in the position are numbered.
Auburn jumped out to an early 14-3 lead in the first quarter. The Tigers were able to take the ball down the field in six plays for the first score of the game, a 17-yard rushing touchdown by Kerryon Johnson.
Ole Miss (2-3, 0-2 SEC) would then answer with a field goal by Gary Wunderlich from 27 yards out. That would be all the points the Rebels would put on the scoreboard in the first-half.
After the first touchdown for Auburn, the Tigers went on to add 28 unanswered points to the scoreboard prior to going into the locker room at the half with the score at 35-3.
In the second half, sophomore quarterback Shea Patterson and the Rebel offense cut into the Tigers’ 32 point advantage. Patterson connected with his freshman wide receiver D.K. Metcalf for a nine-yard touchdown. It was the first Ole Miss touchdown since the second quarter against the Cal Bears.
The Landshark defense stood strong in the second half by only allowing the Tigers three field goals.
Ole Miss scored two additional touchdowns in the fourth quarter as Patterson found Metcalf one more time for an eight-yard reception. The final score came on the ground by senior Jordan Wilkins.
The Rebels return home next Saturday to host the Vanderbilt Commodores for homecoming. Game time is set for 2:30 p.m.
Meanwhile, the Rebels will be taking applications to fill Luke’s position:
“The selected candidate will organize and direct all aspects of the NCAA Division I Football program. Some of the responsibilities include identifying and recruiting athletically and academically qualified student-athletes; scheduling and conducting regular practice sessions; overseeing the administrative process for budget, student-athlete eligibility and academic progress; participating in fund raising and public relations activities; and promoting the philosophy and objectives of the Intercollegiate Athletics program that student-athletes should be successful athletically and academically. Knowledge of and commitment to compliance with all NCAA, Conference, departmental, and University rules and regulations as well as dedication to full academic development of student-athletes are essential.”
