The Ole Miss volleyball team steps into conference action tonight as they host the Auburn Tigers inside the Gillom Sports Center. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
Ole Miss (9-4) heads into conference play after going 2-1 last week against Northern Colorado and South Alabama. The Rebels’ senior outside hitter Lexi Thompson set the career record for kills (1,203) in the rally era in the win over South Alabama. She now owns the single-season (437) and career records.
Coach Steven McRoberts discussed playing Auburn tonight, and opening up SEC play in his press conference on Monday.
“We are going into the first week of SEC play and will face a very good Auburn team on Friday. They have played a really tough schedule and done well in that,” McRoberts said. “We feel confident with our team that if we can steady out and play consistent that we can be competitive and beat anyone in the league, but we have yet to shown that we can even stay consistent within the same match. We have a great group of young ladies that are working really hard.“
Auburn enters SEC play at 7-2 after a close 3-2 loss to No. 20 Florida State last Saturday. Just like the Rebels, the Tigers’ final non-conference weekend got changed. Auburn was scheduled to go to Miami for a tournament but instead traveled to Tallahassee for the match against Florida State.
The Tigers are led by sophomore Gwyn Jones, who averages 2.85 kills per set. She tallied a career-high 19 kills against Florida State. Sophomore Shaina White ranks second in the SEC with a .476 hitting percentage.
