Camp Lake Stephens Readies for Summer

Published

on

Staff members and volunteers are in a scramble to ready Camp Lake Stephens for the first of 1500 campers who will arrive next week for the camping season which goes through the end of July.

Lake Stephens is operated by the United Methodist Church on property located on 150 acres south of Oxford. The camp includes housing, dining, meeting, and activity facilities as well as a Olympic size pool and spring feed lake.

While staffers such as Joel Garrott, an Ole Miss junior from Senatobia, and Morgan Tubbs, senior at Mississippi State from Cleveland, huddled about the property making opening week program plans, Oxford Boy Scouts were busy erecting and painting directional signs. Gage Dorris collected members of Troop 45 to complete his Eagle Scout project before opening week.

Lake Stephens offers a wide range of programs for students from first grade through senior year, including elementary, junior and senior high camps. Mini-camps, day camps, and camps for mentally challenged students are also offered.

Older campers make side trips for back packing at the Sipsey Wilderness Park in Alabama; rafting, fly fishing, rock climbing, kayaking and tubing at various Mid-South locations, including Arkansas’ noted Buffalo River.
