Hunter Crane, head coach for the Oxford Lady Chargers’ soccer team, is the Mississippi Association of Coaches Girls’ Soccer Coach of the Year. Crane received the prestigious award during the 45th Annual Mississippi Association of Coaches Hall of Fame and Awards Banquet on Friday, June 23, 2017.
Crane — who joined the Oxford School District in 2013 and took over the Lady Chargers’ soccer program during the summer of 2015 — has led the high school girls’ soccer program to back-to-back 2-5A District Championship and 5A State Championship titles during his short tenure with the school district. Under Crane’s leadership, the Lady Chargers have built a 40-5 record with two consecutive 20-win seasons, going undefeated in the 2016-17 season.
To top off the stellar 2016-17 season, the Lady Chargers’ soccer team finished their season with recognition by USA Today as the #1 ranked high school girls’ soccer team in Region 2 (Mississippi and Louisiana) and #9 ranked high school girls’ soccer team in the nation. Also, the Lady Chargers were ranked #10 and #17 by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America and MaxPreps, respectively
Crane has also received other professional accolades including Daily Journal 2017 Girls’ Soccer Coach of the Year and 2017 Girls’ Soccer Team of the Year; however, Crane says he is proudest of his players’ accomplishments.
“These girls have accomplished some amazing feats individually and also as a team during my time as head coach,” says Crane. “I am proudest of the accomplishments of our girls: four are Mississippi Association of Coaches Girls’ Soccer All-Star selections, four are continuing their soccer career at the next level on the college playing field, and of course, we have one who was named the Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year in girls’ soccer. These awards alone demonstrate how dedicated these girls are to the sport and to being first in class as student-athletes.”
