Thornberry Set For PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic
Ole Miss men’s golfer Braden Thornberry is ready to join the top professional golfers in the world once again, competing in the PGA Tour’s Greenbrier Classic this week (July 6-9) in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia.
Thornberry earned a spot in the field as the winner of the Fred Haskins Award, given to the nation’s top collegiate golfer. He was honored as the award winner Tuesday night at The Greenbrier – America’s Resort. The NCAA national champion tees off in round one Thursday at 12:50 p.m. CT in a group that includes Brandon Hagy and Bobby Wyatt at The Old White TPC at The Greenbrier, a par-70 course that measures 7,287 yards. Thornberry will play in the same group Friday with a 7:50 a.m. tee time.
This will be Thornberry’s second career start on the PGA Tour. The Southaven, Mississippi, native made his debut at last month’s FedEx St. Jude Classic and finished in a tie for fourth. Thornberry’s four-round total of 272 (8-under) was just two shots off the lead after he fired a 5-under 65 in the final round. With his fourth-place showing, Thornberry became the highest amateur finisher at the FedEx St. Jude since 1965 and has the best amateur finish on the PGA Tour this season.
Ole Miss All-American and PGA Tour pro Jonathan Randolph will also compete in The Greenbrier Classic this week. Randolph tees off at 7:40 a.m. Thursday and 12:40 p.m. Friday.
Thornberry and Randolph are the two Rebels in the 156-player field. Following the first two rounds, the top 70 (plus ties) will make the cut and play an additional 36 holes on the weekend. At the conclusion of the 72-hole event, the $7.1 million purse will be divided up with $1.278 million awarded to the champion.
The Greenbrier Classic returns to the PGA Tour schedule after last year’s tournament was rained out due to massive flooding in West Virginia. Danny Lee won the 2015 tournament with a 13-under 267.
