As the 2017 college football season approaches, fans await the announcements of all of the preseason awards released in the summer. On Tuesday, Athlon Sports released its 2017 preseason All-American teams.
Two Ole Miss seniors were named to the third team All-Americans list including DE Marquis Haynes and K Gary Wunderlich.
Haynes was awarded the Chucky Mullins Courage Award at the conclusion of Spring Practice earlier this year. The number 38 is given to a rising senior defensive leader each year to honor Ole Miss legend, Chucky Mullins. Throughout his three seasons playing for the red and blue Haynes has tailed up 127 total tackles, 24.5 sacks and 36.5 tackles for loss.
Wunderlich enters his senior campaign as the field goal specialist for the Rebels. In the previous three seasons, he has made a total of 47 field goals. During the 2016 season, Wunderlich missed just one field goal attempt going 22 for 23 as was among the most efficient kickers in the country. Wunderlich’s career long came last season against Auburn when the junior hit a 49-yard field goal.
A total of 26 players were selected to the Athlon’s All-American preseason teams from the Southeastern Conference. Eight players were selected on the first-team, seven on both the second and third teams and the remaining four players named to the fourth team.
