North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic Lets Blues Culture Shine
The 2017 North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic will be held June 23 and June 24, 2017, at the Betty Davis barbecue in Waterford, MS. The event features a wide array of Mississippi blues artists, a raffle, food vendors, and a guitar workshop.
The North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic is a nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness about Mississippi Hill Country Blues. The organization focuses on keeping Mississippi’s native art form alive through performance, preservation, and interpretation. The organization holds its highly anticipated Hill Country Picnic annually to provide a platform and exposure for many native Hill Country Blues artists and bands.
This year’s event features twenty-three sets over the span of two days. The event also features a raffle, and the proceeds from ticket sales are donated to a local cause each year. Raffle tickets can be purchased at the event’s raffle booth on Friday and Saturday. Raffle prizes include an assortment of donated blues memorabilia. The organization is still accepting donations to the 2017 raffle. Anyone who is interested in donating should send an email with the word “Raffle” in the subject line to nmsraffle@gmail.com.
In addition to the music festival, the organization hosts a guitar workshop on June 22 from 10 AM to 3 PM. Instructors for the 2017 workshop are Kenny Brown, Alvin Youngblood Hart, DuWayne Burnside, and Cary Hudson. After the workshop on Thursday evening, there will be a free pre-Picnic show on the festival grounds.
Tickets for the event range from $25 for single-day passes to $150 for a VIP full weekend package and $100 for the featured guitar workshop. Guests can also purchase camping passes for $15 and cooler passes for $10 through the event’s website. Online ticket sales end June 19 at 11:30 PM, but tickets can also be purchased at the gate with cash only.
