SEC Country: Veteran New York Giants Teammate Says Evan Engram ‘Runs Routes As Well As Anyone On Our Team’
Move over Odell Beckham Jr. and Brandon Marshall.
The New York Giants have a new top route runner, according to one the team’s veterans.
Rookie tight end Evan Engram of Ole Miss impressed the Giants during OTAs. The 23rd overall pick from the NFL draft didn’t take long to impress some of his teammates.
Kim Jones of NFL Network had a glowing report from one of the New York defensive veterans, showing what Rebels fans were hoping to hear out of their former fan favorite.
According to Jones, linebacker Jonathan Casillas had high praise.
“He’s such a dynamic player, a matchup nightmare for linebackers, safetys and cornerbacks,” Casillas said. “Evan Engram runs routes as well as any receiver on our team.
“He creates separation and he has great hands.”
Practices wrapped up Friday for coach Ben McAdoo’s team, which made the playoffs last season but fell in the first round against the Green Bay Packers.
Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News said Engram improved when gaining recognition of the offense throughout the two weeks.
“Those first couple of days, the installs and everything, I was learning but I wasn’t really confident,” Engram said Friday. “I was thinking a lot, I was second guessing myself. But (I’ve been) really digging in in the film room, correcting my mistakes and not letting those same mistakes happen again. That really boosts my confidence. When I know what I’m doing and I could play fast, that’s the biggest leap I’ve taken during these OTAs.”
Dan Salomone of Giants.com, in naming the tight end one of the three standouts from OTAs, said Engram showed a willingness to block, which he was not required to do much of at Ole Miss.
Engram caught 162 passes for 2,320 yards in four seasons at Ole Miss, scoring 15 touchdowns.
