Ole Miss Football Leading Charge for Mississippi Blood Services

With local blood banks at an all-time low, the Ole Miss football team is partnering with Mississippi Blood Services to strengthen reserves for the Oxford-University community.

Rebel players and staff will participate in and help host a blood drive Monday through Wednesday (April 17-19) between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. at the Courtyard by Marriott Oxford at 306 Jackson Avenue East. Donors will receive a t-shirt.

“As a program, we always want to do our part to help those in need in the community,” said Ole Miss head coach Hugh Freeze. “After hearing from MBS, we saw this as an opportunity to make an impact with a lot of people in North Mississippi. We encourage everyone who is able to join us in replenishing the blood bank.”

Donors must bring an ID and are encouraged to eat at least four hours within giving blood and drink plenty of fluids before and after making a donation. For questions, contact MBS at msblood.com or 888-90-BLOOD.

Thornberry Rolls To Win No. 4 At Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate

Sophomore Braden Thornberry fired a 6-under par 65 for a tournament total 14-under par 199 to roll to his fourth medalist honor of the season, leading No. 21 Ole Miss to a second-place finish at the Ryman Hospitality Intercollegiate Tuesday.
Entering the final round with an eight-stroke lead, Thornberry started his round with eight pars and a bogey to finish one-over on the front nine. However, the sophomore turned it up at the turn to put on a clinic on the back nine with a streak of five birdies and an eagle on holes No. 10 through 15 to finish the back nine at 7-under par 29.
The Olive Branch, Mississippi native carded the best score of each round during the tournament. Thornberry finished one stroke shy of the school record for the lowest three-round score, a mark he set at the AutoTrader.com Collegiate Classic in October. He was one of two competitors to score under par, clearing runner-up Dawson Armstrong of Lipscomb by 13 strokes.
“Braden showed once again why he is one of the best players in the nation,” said head coach Chris Malloy. “Five birdies in a row on the back nine was very impressive. He is peaking at the right time.”
The Rebels’ ace posted rounds of 67-65-67 to earn the school record for most rounds in the 60s in a season with 16, surpassing Rebel All-American Jonathan Randolph. Thornberry ties Dave Peeg for most rounds under par in a season at 22 and is one round shy of breaking Randolph’s mark of rounds par or better in a season, set at 28. His season average dips down to 69.75 following this tournament, on pace to break Randolph’s record average of 70.44 in 2009-10.
Ole Miss posted a tournament score of 10-over par 862. The Rebels climbed to a tie for third in school history for the most top-five finishes in a season with their second-place finish. Host No. 35 Lipscomb edged Ole Miss by three strokes to claim the tournament title. The Rebels finished 30 strokes over third place Chattanooga, fourth place Western Kentucky and fifth place Mercer.
“We put ourselves in a position to win on the final nine holes and just weren’t quite able to close the door,” said Malloy. “We will learn from it and be ready for post season play.”
Ole Miss was able to capture a top-3 finish thanks to top-25 performances by the team. Senior Ben Wolcott eagled the 507-yard par-5 10th hole at Richland Country Club to finish 1-under 70 for his best round of the tournament. The Dickson, Tennessee native grabbed his sixth top-10 finish of the season as he finished in ninth place. Sophomore Josh Seiple highlighted his tournament even-par 71 in the opening round and posted a final-round 75 to earn a career-best tie for tenth place finish. Freshman Brody Blackmon earned the top-spot among individuals after posting a final round 3-over par 74 to earn a career-best share for 14th place. Junior Kerry Sweeney posted consecutive rounds of 2-over par 73 on day one to finish 20th. Senior Noah West tied for 25th with an overall score of 228.
The Rebels get set to travel to Sea Island, Georgia for the SEC Championships at Sea Island Golf Club April 21-24.
