New Parking Garage To Provide Surplus Of Residential Spots
The university has recently built several new dormitories without expanding the parking options for the students that live in those dorms. The beginning of the 2017-18 school year will see that change with the opening of the new garage next to Kincannon Hall. The garage is expected to have 1,500 parking spots for residential students. With about 300 spots displaced during the construction of the garage, students can expect a net gain of around 1,250 spots.
“Roughly 800 people were shoved off campus because of building up the dorms without parking,” said Hal Robinson, manager of transportation at Ole Miss. “A lot of the new construction has gone in our parking lots, but they’ve built buildings without adding parking for those buildings. We’ve had a deficit of parking in residential zones for the past three years. The garage will get us back above water. We’ll actually have a surplus of residential parking once the garage comes online.”
The garage is built exclusively for residential students due to the overflow to other lots. The plethora of new spaces will combat the amount of students who have been parking at the silver lots on Chucky Mullins Drive, from which students had to be bused onto campus.
The upper Kincannon field lot will become a commuter lot in the fall, according to Robinson.
The construction crews are expected to finish the garage in mid-July, at which time Robinson’s department will take over in order to put up signs, clean up and get the structure ready for students to use in August.
