7 Ways To Go Green In Oxford For St. Patrick's Day

Published

on

In case you haven’t heard, today is St. Patrick’s Day, a day of all things green. There are a ton of different ways to go green today, so here’s a list of our favorite ways. Some items on the list are traditional, others may be a new twist on going green for the holiday.

Save energy

Go green and save green by turning your lights off when you’re out of the room, turn a lamp on instead of big overhead lights. Turn your thermostat down, and watch your bill shrink before your very eyes. With a smaller bill, there will be more green in your pocket to use for St. Patrick’s day.

Walk or bike to work

Thacker-Mountain-Trails_bike.jpgHere in Oxford, we’re blessed with walking and biking trails all over town. If you live in close proximity to your office, trade in your car keys for your running shoes. Save money on gas, help the environment and most importantly, with all the exercise you’ll earn yourself a green beer from the Square.

Eat a salad

It’s green. It’s good if you add enough dressing and maybe some bacon to it, so today is the perfect day to head to Greenline and build your festive salad creation for lunch. When dinner time rolls around you can indulge in corned beef and cabbage knowing that you went green for lunch.

Recycle

It may be a bit of extra work but the hardworking people of Oxford-Lafayette Recycling will thank you for it. St. Patricks Day is all about luck, and choosing to recycle a can instead of throwing it away may just turn your luck around.

Bottled water

However you celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, it may be a good idea to hydrate beforehand. The best way to do that isn’t to drink and discard several bottles of water. A Brita water bottle is a great way to stay festive, hydrated and green.

Spend green money on locally farmed products

You can by mass produced milk, vegetables, fruits etc. at any chain, and they’ll be good, or you can put green back into the local economy by purchasing produce at any one of the sources around Oxford. Brown’s Family Dairy, the Neon Pig’s butcher shop and produce section, Living Foods and many more are all examples of Oxford’s sustainable food system.

Wear GREEN…obviously

Whether you want to be festive or avoid getting pinched by people all day long, throw a green shirt on and call yourself Irish for the day. If you don’t have a green shirt, there’s no shortage of clothing stores around Oxford for you to find one.
