What To Do In Oxford While The Students Are Away

Spring Break has finally arrived, and students everywhere rejoiced..then there’s recent graduates and adults.

If you’re like me, most of your friends are either still in school or they somehow have unlimited vacation days, and you’re sitting at your desk wishing you were still in college. Or, maybe you’re an actual adult who has no desire to go on Spring Break, but you’re looking forward to Oxford being empty this week.
This list is for you young professionals and Oxford locals. While these plans may not be as fun as going to the beach, here’s 5 things to do around Oxford while all the students are away.

Go out to eat/out for drinks.

BBB, McEwen’s, Wing Wednesdays at Jensei and so many more always have long wait times when Oxford is full. But when students are away, parents aren’t coming in to visit and take their kids out for breakfast or dinner. Open tables mean no wait times, better service and your food’s served quicker. Going to the Coop, or any other bar, will also be an easier experience. No one crying because they can’t find their friends or none of those who want to fight everyone that accidentally bumps into them will be a nice change of pace around the Square.

Go grocery shopping

I told you none of these were as fun as going to the beach.. but no one wants to go grocery shopping when the aisles are jammed and the checkout lines are long. Without the thousands of students in town, the shelves should be stocked, and the stores should be empty.

Go to the Square

I can already see the open parking spots. While students are away, there won’t be as many people walking around the Square. While all of the stores on the Square are great, they’re a little quaint. With more room to maneuver, taking a ride over to the Square may be a good idea.

Ole Miss Baseball

Ole Miss starts SEC play with a three-game series against Vanderbilt this Friday, and right field may be a bit empty. If you are in town, make sure to head over to Swayze to keep the home-field advantage alive. Sure it won’t be as entertaining without hearing the chants from right field echo as the right fielder for Vandy tries to make a play, or trying to figure out why someone is being “escorted” out of the stadium, but there’s still nothing like sunshine and some Ole Miss Baseball.

Go to Lamar Park

Typically filled with students jogging, studying or just taking up space, a lot of green space is now available. While I’m not a big park guy myself, I’m sure some of you out there would love to bring a picnic or a book out to Lamar and relax without getting hit with a football or a frisbee.
*If none of these things can help you get over the fact that you don’t get a Spring Break, then I’ll add a bonus one.

Go on Spring Break anyway

Call in sick or use up your vacation days, get in the car and meet your friends at the beach. If getting Snapchats or seeing pictures of your friends having fun is unbearable, you still have time. Sure your boss may not believe your sick, but who cares. You’ll be at the beach, in the mountains or off the grid.. worry about the consequences when you get back. And hey, if you get fired… then look at it as a really long spring “break.”
