Thornberry Rolls To Victory At Jones Cup

Ole Miss sophomore Braden Thornberry fired a three-round 4-under par 212 to win the prestigious 2017 Jones Cup Invitational at Ocean Forest Golf Club Sunday. Thornberry’s victory earns him a sponsorship invite to the RSM Classic at Sea Island Golf Club.
Thornberry got off to a hot start on the final day, posting birdies on holes No. 1 and 3, but would finish the front nine at even-par. The sophomore strung together four pars and post a birdie on the 562-yard par-5 hole No. 14. and finished 1-over par 73 to best second place Oklahoma’s Max McGreevy by five strokes.
The field battled cold and rainy conditions during the second round to average a 79.88 score Saturday, but the Rebels’ top finisher in the fall post a tournament best second-round score of even-par 72 to gain a comfortable six-stroke lead headed into the final round.
Thornberry, the nation’s leader in stroke average during the fall, continued to shine against a field that included 27 of Golfstat’s top-100 players by firing a 5-under 67 in the opening round. He claimed one of the tournament’s four eagles Friday on the 560-yard par-5 hole No. 3.
Thornberry joins a list of champions that range from current and future PGA Tour stars DJ Trahan, Gregg Jones, Nicholas Thompson, Luke List, Kyle Stanley, Patrick Reed and John Peterson. Past participants also include Luke Donald, Rickie Fowler, Lucas Glover, Dustin Johnson, Chris Kirk, Jeff Overton, Webb Simpson, Brandt Snedeker, Bubba Watson and Gary Woodland.
Thornberry and the Rebels get set to tee off their spring season February 21 at the Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. Ole Miss Rifle Tops Akron in Close Match

The Ole Miss rifle team topped No. 15 Akron in a tight match 4649-4643 in Lexington, Kentucky Saturday. This marks the highest score shot against Akron (by 58 points) in school history.
The Rebels defeated the Zips in air rifle (2352-2336), but fell in the smallbore competition (2307-2297).
Recapping the Match
Senior Alison Weisz led the Rebels in air rifle as she posted a 592 to contribute to the team’s overall 2352 and lead all scorers in the match. Freshman Hayley Carroll followed behind Weisz shooting a 588, the second highest score of her career at Ole Miss. Junior Jessica Haig finished just one point behind Carroll as she shot a 587. Though sophomore Samantha Sandifer’s score did not contribute to the team’s aggregate, she tied her personal best with a 581.
