Chamber of Commerce Announces 2017 Leadership Lafayette Class

 

Thursday night the Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce and community members welcomed the 2017 class of Leadership Lafayette at the Chamber After Hours at BancorpSouth.

This year’s Leadership Lafayette class includes 22 members from the University of Mississippi, Oxford Police Department, Winchester Ammunition, and many other local businesses. 
The Leadership Lafayette Class of 2017 met for their first all day class meeting on Friday, Jan. 13. At this session, they learned about what leadership truly means, their personality types, how to grow their strengths, and time management. Local community members teach all sessions, with only a few exceptions.

Over the next nine months, these 22 community members will engage in monthly all day class meetings to learn about the aspects of Lafayette County that make it unique and diverse. These sessions will cover topics such as criminal justice, the University of Mississippi, business and industry, and even community service.
During these monthly meetings, the class members will tour athletic facilities on the University of Mississippi’s campus, watch demonstrations at Wildrose Kennels, complete a scavenger hunt around Oxford, tour the jail, hear from local and federal law enforcement, and create lasting connections and friendships.By March the class will be broken into groups to work on a community-based project. Each team will be tasked with adopting or creating a project that will positively impact Oxford and Lafayette County in a positive way, and that can be completed before the class ends in September.

Past Leadership Lafayette class projects include Oxford Recycling, Releaf Oxford, Food Truck Fight, Family Crisis Services Bowling for Bravery, LOFT’s Night for Non-Profits, and the Lafayette County Welcome signs.

Participation in Leadership Lafayette is an honor that is awarded to those who work or live in Lafayette County. The application is available in the fall of each year and the new class is announced every January. The applicate pool is always highly competitive and the Steering Committee and the community are fortunate to have many talented and hardworking individuals dedicated to making Oxford an even better place to live.
