Ole Miss Football: Egg Bowl a Big Game for Freeze

There have been many critical games for Hugh Freeze in his tenure at Ole Miss. The Egg Bowl on Saturday may be one of his biggest.

Everyone who has followed the Ole Miss football program knows the remarkable job Hugh Freeze has done in his time in Oxford. He has won one more game than the previous season every year until this year. Make no mistake, the 2016 campaign has been a disappointing one. However, it can either be somewhat salvaged or be a complete disaster. That will be determined on Saturday in the Egg Bowl against Mississippi State.

I would argue that the biggest game so far for Hugh Freeze in his Ole Miss career was the 2012 Egg Bowl. The Rebels needed a win to gain bowl eligibility. Not only that, it probably allowed them to sign Robert Nkemdiche, Laremy Tunsil and Laquon Treadwell. Those three brought success in the following three seasons for Ole Miss. If Freeze doesn’t sign them, who knows what trajectory the program would have gone on. It likely wouldn’t have been as good as the 2013, 2014 and 2015 seasons were.

Two Rebels Selected for SEC Corporate Career Tour

Two Rebels – Mike Hilton and Alex Schneider – will participate in the first SEC Corporate Career Tour to be held Nov. 29-Dec. 1, the league office announced Tuesday.

The event, hosted in Atlanta, will be held in conjunction with the 2016 SEC Fall Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) meeting.

The group is scheduled to visit the headquarters and meet with executives and talent acquisition staff at several corporations in the Atlanta area including Chick-fil-A, Boys & Girls Club of America, CNN/Turner Broadcasting System and Jackson Spalding. Also included on the agenda is a presentation from Serviam Partners President Randy Hain, Growing Leaders, and former SEC student-athletes Ben Troupe and Josh Foliart on leadership and life after sports.

The Fall Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) meeting will include a unique first time experience for meeting participants. The meeting will focus on providing a corporate career tour as a part of the SEC Career Academy. Job opportunities and advice will be introduced to student-athletes seeking career options and exposure.

Hilton and Schneider are among 26 current and former SEC student-athletes participating in the event.

Hilton was a four-year letterman for the Rebels, starting at every position in the secondary during his collegiate career. Last year’s Chucky Mullins Courage Award winner, Hilton finished his Ole Miss career with 226 tackles, 25.5 TFLs, 32 passes defended and six interceptions.

Schneider is entering her junior season on the diamond, and has played more than 105 games in her two-year career thus far. She is an Ole Miss SAAC Executive Officer, and SAAC representative at the conference level.

NFL Rebels Weekly Update

Here at OleMissSports.com, we are proud to update Rebel fans on the exploits of our former players who lace up their cleats on Sundays in the NFL. Ole Miss has a big presence in the league again this year. There are currently 20 former Rebels on NFL rosters, including two-time Super Bowl MVP Eli Manning, recent Super Bowl participants Brandon Bolden and Michael Oher, and 2016 first-round draft picks Robert Nkemdiche, Laquon Treadwell and Laremy Tunsil.

Eight former Rebels made appearances last week. Eli Manning had a two-touchdown day in a victory for New York, while Donte Moncrief scored in a Colts win over the Titans.

Here’s a rundown of how each former Rebel performed in week 11 of the 2016 NFL season:

#27 SENQUEZ GOLSON | CB | Pittsburgh Steelers

Did not see action for Pittsburgh’s victory over Cleveland due to injury. Has been placed on injured reserve and will miss the remainder of the season.

#74 WOODROW HAMILTON | DT | New England Patriots

Did not see action in the Patriots’ victory over San Francisco (30-17).

#77 JOHN JERRY | OG | New York Giants

Started at right guard in the Giants’ win over the Bears (22-16).

#23 KENDRICK LEWIS | S | Baltimore Ravens

Did not contribute to Baltimore’s defeat to Dallas. Has been placed on injured reserve.

#10 ELI MANNING | QB | New York Giants

Started at QB for New York, completing 21 of 36 passes for 227 yards with two touchdowns and no picks in a victory over the Bears (22-16).

#70 BOBBY MASSIE | OT | Chicago Bears

Did not play in the Bears’ defeat to the Giants (22-16) due to a concussion suffered the previous week.
