As Ole Miss rifle is half way through the 2016-17 season, new head coach Marsha Beasley is proud to announce her first addition to the program, Minnesota native Abby Buesseler, a smallbore four position state champion, who will join the team in the fall of 2017.
Buesseler, who joins the Rebels as a former member of the Minnesota Centershots, was part of the NRA National Championship team, the US Army Junior Air Rifle National Championship team and the CMP 3PAR National Championship team. Buesseler was also recognized for the CMP Silver Distinguished Expert award after finishing eighth at the CMP Regionals in March.
In addition, Buesseler earned the NRA Qualification Distinguished Expert in smallbore, 3P sporter class, and 3P precision and finished third at the USASJO.
Shooting for Buesseler is more than just a sport, it is a family lifestyle. Buesseler did not grow up around the sport alone, but with an identical twin sister, Dana Buesseler. Dana Buesseler recently committed to shoot next fall at Murray State, meaning the two will compete against each other for the next four years, something very unfamiliar to the two.
“I had this little thought always in my heart that was hoping we could shoot together, but this past week we made it official, we will be four hours apart and seeing each other at matches when our teams compete,” Buesseler said. “No longer will we see each other every day, our experiences will be different, but I hope the distance will only make us closer when we are together. It will be hard to separate from her, but I am very excited to see all the amazing things she will accomplish. And I know that Murray is where she belongs, and Ole Miss is where I belong.”
Buesseler may be a very accomplished shooter, but she is also very diverse in her interests. She enjoys volleyball, track and field and is a member of the weightlifting program at Forest Lake Senior High. Buesseler earned a letter in track and field and contributed to her team winning four consecutive section titles. She is also active in her community as she is a member of the Girl Scouts and teaches Sunday School through her church.
While Buesseler is passionate on the range, she is just as passionate in the classroom. She has received an academic varsity letter, was Academic All-State and the recipient of the Spotlight on Scholarship Award for Academics. Here at Ole Miss, she hopes to study health sciences and eventually earn a degree in biology.
“My most proud accomplishment is being able to letter in academics, meanwhile balancing my athletic life, shooting life, and school life,” Buesseler said. “I chose Ole Miss because of the academic resources it has for me, and because I fell in love with it the very first time I stepped on campus a little over a year ago.”
Buesseler will be a fantastic addition to the program, but the season isn’t over yet. The Rebels will look to return to the range on Jan. 14 against Kentucky and Murray at the Patricia C. Lamar National Guard Readiness Center.
