Craig and Peppar Garvin met Alan Jones, affectionately known to all as “JJ,” while he was completing some woodwork in their home in Oxford, Mississippi. This meeting quickly became a friendship that turned into a business venture.

An Oxford High School graduate, Jones turned his football talent into a scholarship to Northwest Community College and then to Kentucky State University where he earned a degree in criminal justice. Jones was using this degree to work in loss prevention when he stumbled upon his interest in woodwork.

“I started picking up side jobs and making things with my hands,” Jones said. “Eventually I got so busy doing this that I turned in my notice at my company.”

Jones approached the Garvins about starting a woodworking business of their own with himself as the artist. The Garvins had the business experience and Jones had the talent.

“It didn’t take much discussion at all,” Craig Garvin said. “My wife and I probably talked about it for all of 15 minutes before we said we were going to do it and started figuring out how to make it work.”

JJ’s Wood Shed became a reality for the Garvins and Jones this summer. The store is now open and is located just off North Lamar on Country Road 1014.

The inventory includes one-of-a-kind wood furniture pieces as well as paintings from local artist Tiffeny Flemons Owens and pottery from Taylor, Mississippi, native Keith Stewart.

“We’re excited about this opportunity because there’s nobody else in Oxford like us,” Craig said. “We want to support local talent and local artists.”

Customers can also request any pieces that they want, and it will be custom made. JJ’s Wood Shed has the capability to create tables, benches, wall accent pieces, floor installation, mantels, lamps and much more.

JJ’s Wood Shed will have a ribbon cutting today at 4 p.m. and will host a Grand Opening celebration from 5 p.m. – 7 p.m. afterward. The celebration will include cupcakes, door prizes, handmade coasters, gift certificates and a furniture giveaway. In addition to tonight’s festivities, all furniture will be discounted 20 percent and all pottery and paintings will be discounted 10 percent all weekend.
