The reigning NJCAA national champions and MACJC champion Northwest Rangers have moved back into the No. 1 spot in this week’s NJCAA football poll.

Winners of nine straight dating back to last season, eight by double digits, Northwest is 5-0 overall and sits atop the north division standings with EMCC at 3-0.

The Rangers are the fifth different team to take over the top spot this season. East Mississippi, Trinity Valley (Texas), Snow (Utah) and Arizona Western have all occupied the No. 1 position.

Northwest opened the preseason at No. 10 and has made the steady climb back to No. 1 thanks to three wins over nationally ranked opponents (No. 19 Hinds, No. 10 Itawamba, No. 15 Holmes). All five season wins have also been by double digits.

Benjy Parker is just the second first-year head coach in program history to start a season 5-0. Ray Poole started the 1979 season 7-0 with a No. 1 national ranking and finished the year 9-1 overall.

Northwest will travel to Coahoma on Saturday, Oct. 8 for a 2:30 kickoff on the Tigers’ Homecoming.
