Last week, he said his players would be ready for the game with Memphis. The Tigers’ 37-24 last season remained fresh on his mind, and credit Freeze for having his team ready.
In last season’s loss, Ole Miss led 14-0 and the sideline appeared jovial. That obviously turned quickly. Saturday night, Ole Miss jumped out to a 14-0 lead and didn’t let up. While Memphis did eventually cut it to 27-21, the Rebels responded quickly to make it 34-21 and cruised from there.
Freeze grew up near Memphis, in Independence, Miss., and no doubt heard about last year’s loss often. This week, Freeze can rest easy, enjoy the bye week and get ready for a trip to Arkansas on October 15.
Here are some takeaways from the Rebels’ 48-28 victory.

There may not be a better two-loss team out there than No. 16 Ole Miss — Florida State, Oklahoma and LSU all included. The Rebels showed as much in their get-it-done 48-28 win on Saturday against Memphis, a team that’s being overlooked with the departures of coach Justin Fuente and quarterback Paxton Lynch.
The bottom line: Ole Miss got it done and, most importantly, held onto its comfy first-half lead for the second straight week. When the Tigers cut their deficit to six points, Hugh Freeze’s squad responded confidently with two no-sweat touchdown drives that lasted less than two minutes each. Chad Kelly kept the turnover bug at bay as he hit Evan Engram on a 12-yard scoring strike and Damore’ea Stringfellow on a 29-yard pass that set up the next TD, stunting his opponent’s momentum just as it was building.

Behind home runs by junior Tate Blackman and sophomore Chase Cockrell, the Blue squad took Friday afternoon’s intradsquad 8-4. Freshman Thomas Dillard and sophomore Ryan Olenek recorded two hits apiece, adding a double and triple, respectively. Junior Kyle Watson homered as well in the contest. On the mound, junior southpaw David Parkinson tossed 3.0 scoreless innings, allowing only one hit.
Wrapping up the weekend, the Rebels tallied 21 hits between the two squads. Back-to-back homers by freshman Cooper Johnson and redshirt sophomore Michael Fitzsimmons powered Red to a 5-1 win. Four freshmen earned multi-hit games to lead the team to victory, including Johnson, Grae Kessinger, Bryan Seamster and Trace Tyre. The freshmen knocked in four of the team’s five runs while also scoring crossing the plate a combined four times. Senior Sean Johnson got the start, keeping Blue off the scoreboard for 3.0 innings before freshman Jason Barber finished the job with 3.0 scoreless frames of relief.
For Blue, Cockrell capped off a strong weekend at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a double and one run. Bryce Blaum, Nick Fortes and Cole Zabowski went 2-for-3 in the effort as the underclassmen continue to produce at the plate throughout the fall.
The Rebels will return to the diamond for two more intrasquad scrimmages this week at Swayze Field (Oct. 7-8). Friday’s Red-Blue matchup is slated for a 2:30 p.m. start, while Saturday’s contest will have a 12 p.m. first pitch. All intrasquad scrimmages are free and open to the public.
