Homecoming 2016….It’s Yesterday Once More
Walking around the campus early this morning, the lyrics of Karen Carpenter were ringing through my head as I was thinking; it truly is yesterday once more. The mega hit went on to say how sad it is that so much has changed. However, there are two ways to look at this. Here’s why….
Ole Miss has changed dramatically from my freshman first semester in October 1965. The student union, once a postage stamp, is now a multi-service facility. The dorms in 1965 resembled more closely WWII barracks than hi-tech condo-like housing. Stewart and Kincannon were still relatively new compared to their antiquated status of today. The athletic facilities were pale in comparison in 1965 and in some ways reflected the image of metropolitan high schools.
But probably the greatest difference today is the student itself. Very few out-of-state students graced the Ole Miss campus 51 years ago compared to a 50 state national presence now. Even from my hometown of Nashville, you could then count the number of representatives on both hands. Nashville today is one of the largest alumni organizations we have. I like to believe that brother George and I had a great deal in influencing this.
Ole Miss has changed in so many ways for the better. Whether it’s the academic reputation; modern facilities; beauty of the campus; or world class destination, it’s all good! Yes, it is truly “yesterday once more”, with so many great memories as alums travel here from all directions to experience this great university…the 2016 version.
