Northwest Mississippi Community College freshman kicker/punter Drake McCarter has been recognized for excellence for the month of September by the Fred Mitchell Award, the organization announced on Wednesday.

The annual Fred Mitchell Outstanding Place-Kicker Award (also known as the Fred Mitchell Award) is provided to the nation’s top collegiate place-kicker among more than 750 FCS, Division II, III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams. The award is named for Fred Mitchell, the record-setting place-kicker, Wittenberg University Athletic Hall of Famer, author, philanthropist and Chicago Tribune sports columnist.

A total of 16 place-kickers across the nation were recognized for their excellence on the football field and in the community during the month of September. McCarter and Georgia Military’s Grant Clemons are the lone two honorees from the NJCAA ranks.

For the season, McCarter leads the Rangers in scoring with 34 points (3rd in the NJCAA) from 6 of 8 field goals and 16 of 17 point after attempts. He’s also averaging 61.2 yards on 27 kickoffs with six touchbacks.

The Saltillo native has volunteered in the community and helped with church events at Macedonia Baptist Church and also read to first and second graders at Saltillo Elementary School twice a month.

McCarter is a two-time MACJC Special Teams Player of the Week selection and was also the national player of the week on Sept. 21.

The recipient of the Fred Mitchell Award will be announced in mid-December based on performance on the football field and in the community. Details are provided at www.fredmitchellaward.com.
