Tywun Walters rushed for a career-high 147 yards and three touchdowns and No. 2 Northwest handled business at Mississippi DeltaThursday night, 38-7, to stay unbeaten on the season.

Winners of eight straight overall, Northwest improved to 4-0 overall and 2-0 in the division, while MDCC fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the north.

Both teams got off to a sluggish start, with Drake McCarter’s 34-yard field goal at the 6:08-mark the lone points of the first quarter.

Walters’ first of three rushing touchdowns of the night, a 3-yard score to start the second quarter, helped the Ranger offense rattle off 21 second quarter points to take a commanding 24-0 lead at the half.

Northwest scored on three of four possessions in the quarter, the second touchdown coming on a 13-play, 87-yard drive, capped by an 8-yard Walters run, and the third an 8-yard touchdown strike from Clay Holgorsen to Darius Thomas.

MDCC would capitalize off a sack and fumble at the Rangers’ 7-yard line on the third play of the second half to pull within 24-7, the Trojans’ first touchdown of the season in four games. Jaybril Haymon rushed in from 5 yards out on 2nd-and-goal thanks to the turnover in the red zone.

The Trojans looked poised to cut the lead to two scores on their next possession, with Austin Guy breaking free for a 64-yard gain down to the Rangers’ 35-yard line. But Guy was tracked down and stripped by Tito Windham, who never gave up on the play, and Wesley Bush recovered the fumble to keep MDCC from scoring.

Two drives later, Northwest capitalized off a short field and needed just one play, a career-long 59-yard touchdown run from Walters, to make it 31-7.

Turner Rotenberry’s first career interception helped setup the Rangers’ next score, with the freshman returning Guy’s pass to the MDCC 49-yard line. Three plays later, Cam Bowman hit Dee White for a 43-yard touchdown to make it 38-7 after three quarters. It marked the first career TD pass and first career TD reception for the freshman duo.

Northwest held the ball for 11:10 in the fourth quarter with a heavy dose of Ben Hoffman, Benny Benson and Quarderman Sloan, and eventually took a knee at the MDCC 4-yard line as time expired.

The Rangers outgained the Trojans 455-194 on the night, rushing for a season-high 295 yards. The Rangers’ defense allowed just the lone touchdown in the third quarter and finished with nine tackles-for-loss, two sacks and two interceptions.

Northwest will welcome unbeaten and nationally-ranked Holmes (4-0, 2-0) to town on Thursday, Sept. 29 for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff on Homecoming. The game will be broadcast live at www.nwccrangers.com/watch.
