FUN VIDEO: Hummingbirds Make Pitstop Near Sardis Lake

Have you noticed hummingbirds making a visit to your porch or birdbath this fall?

That’s because Ruby-throated Hummingbirds typically arrive in Mississippi and leave in October. On average these tiny birds hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings 12–90 times per second.

According to the Strawberry Plains Audubon Center in Holly Springs, the ruby-throated hummingbirds annually migrate from North America, across the Gulf of Mexico to overwinter in Central and South America.

Recently HottyToddy.com founder Ed Meek captured on video a handful of hummingbirds taking a pitstop on his back porch near Sardis Lake.

“They are very fun to watch,” Meek said.

The Strawberry Plains Audubon Center hosted it’s 17th annual Hummingbird Migration and Nature Celebration September 9 to 11, one of the Southeast’s biggest nature festivals.

In recent years the celebration has attracted roughly 9,000 hummingbird enthuseists over the three day event.
