Thousands of people in Oxford and Lafayette County are mourning the loss of Walker Atkinson, a fourteen-year-old who died in a single car accident this past weekend. Today, funeral services celebrated his life, and as Kamera Griffin shows us, despite their grief people are happy to remember Walker.
A friend said, “His personality was just nothing like anybody else’s and…he didn’t deserve this, but we know that he’s in a better place now, and all we can do is just pray for his family.”
It was standing room only at the First Presbyterian Church in Oxford as friends and family gathered to remember what they liked best about Walker.
“I used to joke and say, ‘wear blue every day, cause it matches your eyes perfectly, and Friday, he wore a blue shirt and said ‘I wore it for you.’ and that was the last time I saw him,” another friend said.
Police say Walker was alone in the car when it left the road and struck a tree off of County Road 100 on Sunday evening. The Lafayette Middle School student family members both young and old were grateful for the support from the community
“Thank you for coming. I mean, friends, families, even people who just knew him, just once, thank you for coming out. I mean really. There’s no words to express how happy I am <about that>,” said Matthew Atkinson, cousin of Walker Atkinson.
There were tears mixed with happy memories of a young man who will be missed.
