Thanks for reviving some good memories. I sat beside Blind Jim many a time on the Lyceum steps and chatted with him and maybe bought a bag of peanuts that he and his wife roasted. He was truly an Ole Miss classic. I have a great picture of my late son, Stuart, and Blind Jim when Stuart was not quite one year old.
That would be more than 60 years ago. I love your nostalgia. Keep them coming, Maralyn

I Got to know “Jim” as a freshman in 1946. He needed a new sign that he wore with a string around his neck stating ” BLIND JIM- DEAN OF THE FRESHMAN CLASS” I printed new signs for him the years I was there. He always stated that he had seen every football game Ole Miss played for 25(?) years and he had NEVER seen Ole Miss lose a game. He wore a whistle around his neck that was for emergencies. One day we had a slight snow the night before and Jim got off the sidewalk on the the grass (snow) in front of the (then ) chemistry building and couldn’t find his way back on the concrete. This was about 10 in the morning and classes were going on. He blew his whistle he wore around his neck (for emergencies) and it seemed that half the students in classes emptied out of the building to help Jim. Completely disrupted classes in the classrooms overlooking the side walk. That derby hat was always passed around at every game and was always full (and 5 – 10- and even $20 bill were in it as it went around the stadium. Wonderful memories!
