Ole Miss Volleyball’s Kate Gibson Named SEC Player of the Week

Following an outstanding performance at the North Dakota Classic this past weekend, Ole Miss volleyball junior outside hitter Kate Gibson (Sedalia, Colorado) has been named the SEC Player of the Week, the league office announced Monday.

This marks the first SEC weekly honor for Gibson, who earned Most Valuable Player honors last weekend, helping lead the Rebels to their ninth straight regular season tournament title under head coach Steven McRoberts.

Gibson finished the weekend averaging 4.15 kills and 2.46 digs per set. She set a single match record with a career-high 27 kills in the 3-2 win at UND, as the Rebels totaled a single match record of 80 kills. She also had 9 digs and 3 assists against UND. In the other two matches, Gibson recorded a double-double of 15 kills and 10 digs in 3-1 win vs. UC Davis and posted a double-double of 12 kills and 13 digs in the 3-1 win vs. Omaha to close out the tournament.

Ole Miss hosts the Rebel Classic Sept. 2-3 at The Pavilion at Ole Miss. The Rebels will face UT-Arlington in their first match of the tournament Sept. 2 at 6 p.m.

Rebels Picked to Finish Second in SEC Cross Country

The 2015 cross country season was another historic year for the Rebels.

The men’s team finished second in the NCAA South Regional, earning them their second straight trip to the NCAA Championships where they finished 30th. The men were also able to finish third in the SEC Championship after barely missing the title in 2014.

With the success of recent years, and the return of the majority of runners to the Ole Miss roster, the SEC coaches picked the Rebel men to finish second in the SEC when the preseason rankings were released Monday.

The Rebels return lots of experience in eight different All-Region runners. Senior Robert Domanic is the only three-time All-Region member in program history (2013, 2014, 2015) along with fellow 2014 members Taylor Caldwell, Wesley Gallagher, Trevor Gilley and Sean Tobin. Domanic and Tobin were joined in 2015 by Craig Engels, MJ Erb and Mark Robertson.

The USTFCCCA regional rankings were released Monday as well, and the men were picked to finish first in the South Region for the second consecutive year after their second-place finish in 2015.

The women’s team is coming off a program-best fifth-place finish at the 2015 SEC Championships and seventh-place finish at the NCAA South Regional.

The SEC coaches picked the Rebels to repeat their fifth-place finish at the conference meet. They also will start the year off picked to finish third in the NCAA South Region.

The women’s team returns second-team All-SEC runner Mary Alex England after an impressive 2015 campaign which saw her individually finishing 10th overall at the SEC Championships, the highest finish by any Rebel in 2015.

Both the men and women will open their 2016 season Saturday, September 3, at the Brooks Memphis Twilight Classic in Memphis, Tennessee.

Chad Kelly Embracing Expectations, Ready to Produce

Kelly enters his senior season as the most accomplished returning quarterback in the Southeastern Conference and a dark horse Heisman Trophy candidate. He started every game in his debut season for Ole Miss, leading the Rebels to wins over Alabama, Auburn and LSU. But Kelly isn’t talking like a player with an already-long list of college accomplishments.

Scouting the ‘Noles: Running Back

Leading up to the Ole Miss/FSU game, we will be previewing the Seminoles. Today, we look at running back.

Running back is the greatest strength on the Florida State offense, and for good reason. The Seminoles return Heisman candidate Dalvin Cook (229 carries, 1,691 yards, 19 TD in 2015), who is poised to have another outstanding season in Tallahassee before likely setting his sights on the NFL Draft.

Along with Cook, the Seminoles return their second leading rusher in Jacques Patrick (63 carries, 314 yards, 5 TD in 2015) and fourth leading rusher Jonathan Vickers (23 carries, 111 yards, 1 TD).
