The Larry Dhority Endowment has been recently established with the Northwest Mississippi Community College Foundation, according to Sybil Canon, associate vice president for Development and Special Projects.

The scholarship was established in his memory by his wife, Pat Dhority of Hernando, and by his children, Mitchell Dhority of Austin, Texas, and Rachel Dhority, also of Hernando. Larry died in 2013.

He was born in the Como, Mississippi area and moved to Senatobia as a young child. He graduated from Senatobia High School in 1961 and joined the U.S. Navy immediately after graduation.

Upon his discharge in 1964, he returned to Senatobia and enrolled at Northwest. It was at Northwest where he reconnected with the love of his life and became engaged to the former Pat Berryhill. Dhority felt he was unable to afford both college and a wife, so he went to work as a mechanic at American Airlines and spent 18 and a half years there before leaving to work at FedEx for 20 years.

“His love of the Navy came from the fact that this is where he received his career training. He supported many veterans programs,” his wife Pat said.

“A former employee of Northwest, Pat actually worked with the Northwest Foundation in its very early years. In addition, she has been involved in awarding a scholarship with funds raised by a group of dedicated administrative professionals in this area. We are honored that Pat has chosen to honor her husband with this permanent tribute that will last as long as this college exists,” says Canon.

The scholarship will be awarded to a full-time student who is returning from active service with the U.S. Navy, Marine Corps, Army, or Air Force and who has received an honorable discharge. The student should be a resident of either DeSoto or Tate County and demonstrate financial need. The first scholarship will be awarded for the 2017-18 academic year.
