Wesley Walls Inducted into the 2016 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Class

Former Ole Miss football All-American and five-time pro bowler Wesley Walls was inducted into the 2016 Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame Class on Saturday evening.

Walls played under coach Billy Brewer. During his first three seasons in a Rebel uniform, he played defensive end. In his senior season, Walls played both on both the offensive and defensive sides of the ball as he moved to a tight end role.

Walls had a remarkable season at tight end, recording 36 receptions for a total of 426 yards and three touchdowns. He was 1988 teamcaptain, and earned AP First-team All-American and All-SEC honors.

Walls was drafted to the San Fransico 49ers in 1989. He then signed as a free agent with the New Orleans Saints in 1994. Walls found a home with the Carolina Panthers in 1996 until 2001. His final season was in 2003 as a member of the Green Bay Packers.

During his time in the league, Walls was a five-time Pro Bowl player.

In 1998, Wesley and his wife Christy endowed a football scholarship designated for any Ole Miss signee from Pontotoc county, where he is from. The scholarship was a !100,000 gift.

Walls joined a star-studded class inducted into the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame this year that included Sean Brewer from Millsaps, Larry Smith from Alcorn State, Kay James from Southern Mississippi, coach Jackie Sherrill from Biloxi. Sherrill coached at Texas A&M and Mississippi State. The last member of this years’ class was Willie Heidelburg from Southern Mississippi.
