U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.) on Thursday commended Mississippi’s delegates to the 2016 American Legion Boys Nation and American Legion Auxiliary Girls Nation for representing the Magnolia State well.

The delegates (left to right), Reid Stevens of Starkville, Cailin Sims of Vancleave, Rachel Shoemaker of Taylorsville, and Bradley Curtis of Starkville, visited with Cochran as part of their week-long Boys Nation and Girls Nation experience.

Curtis, a Starkville High School senior, and Stevens, who attends Starkville Academy, were selected through the 2016 Mississippi Boys State program at the University of Mississippi to represent the state at Boys Nation in Washington D.C.

Shoemaker and Sims were chosen to attend Girls Nation by delegates to this year’s Mississippi Girls State program, which was held at the University of Southern Mississippi earlier this summer. Shoemaker attends Laurel Christian High School, while Sims is a senior at Vancleave High School.

The Boys and Girls Nation programs focus on government and citizenship education for students who are selected from their respective Girls and Boys State programs. The students selected to represent their states are referred to as “senators.” The annual state and national programs are sponsored by the American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary.
