According to Team USA’s website, defending women’s long jump Olympic champion Brittney Reese made her third Olympic team this afternoon in the women’s long jump with the longest jump of her life. She unleashed a world-leading leap of 23-feet, 11 ¾ inches (7.31m) on her fourth attempt to break the 28-year-old meet record held by Jackie Joyner-Kersee at 23-8.

She unleashed the record-setting jump at the USA Track and Field Olympic trials held today in Eugene, Oregon. She moved to #9 in the world all-time and #2 in the U.S. all-time. Jackie Joiner-Kersie set the U.S. record in 1994 at 7.49m. Reese won the gold medal at the 2012 summer Olympics in London with a jump of 7.12m.

Reese, who was a 2004 graduate of Gulfport (MS) High School, was on the Ole Miss Track & Field team in 2007 and 2008 and returned to get her English degree in 2011.

At that time, she said, “Getting your degree is a serious matter because what if you get hurt?” Reese posed. “What are you going to fall back on? A lot of kids now are turning pro when they really don’t have to, and professionals are not going anywhere.”

Brittney is making her native Gulfport, her Alma Mater at Ole Miss, her state and her country proud. HottyToddy.com will be following Brittney’s progress at this year’s Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Video of today’s jump not yet available. View video here of Brittney’s 7.22m jump at the World Indoor Championships earlier this year in Portland.
