Oxford Crime Report for Thursday, June 30 – Kitchen Fire, Robbery

The Mississippi Highway Patrol will begin the 2016 Fourth of July holiday enforcement on Friday, July 1, at 6:00 p.m. which will conclude at midnight on Monday, July 4.

Captain Johnny Poulos wrote in the release: “With the anticipation of heavy traffic flow throughout the state, all available troopers will be assigned saturation patrols in an effort to maximize visibility and reduce traffic crashes. Motorists should be aware of the fine increase concerning texting while driving in Mississippi which also goes into effect July 1. The fine will increase from $25 to $100 and will be strictly enforced to combat distracted driving. Safety checkpoints will be established during the period to remove impaired drivers from the roadways and promote seatbelt usage.”

In 2015, MHP investigated 138 crashes with two fatalities and made 125 DUI arrests on state and federal highway systems throughout the holiday period.

Donald Draper Jr. – Robbery

On Wednesday, June 29, Oxford police investigators arrested Donald Draper, Jr. (25 of Millington, Tennessee) with one count of robbery. Draper was accused of robbing a female at the Circle K gas station on Highway 6 West. Allegedly, Draper attempted to get in the car with the female and when she told him to leave, he stole her wallet and fled. Officers apprehended Draper across the highway from the convenience store. His bond is set at $5,000.

Jared Foster – Grand Larceny

On Wednesday, June 29, Oxford police investigators served an arrest warrant to Jared Foster for grand larceny. Foster is accused of stealing $13,000 worth of goods from Mr. Feathers’ Honky Tonk in October 2015. His bond is set at $2,500.

Michael Ballentine – Shoplifting

On Wednesday, June 29, Oxford police investigators served an arrest warrant to Michael Ballentine (46 of Sardis) with one count of felony shoplifting. Ballentine is accused of shoplifting at Wal-Mart Supercenter (located on Jackson Avenue) on June 27. The total amount stolen is over $800. Ballentine has two other convictions on his record for shoplifting. His bond is set at $2,500.

Oxford police responded to the following incidents: three noise violations, three phone harassment, two simple assaults, two disturbances, two animal complaints, two alarms, two welfare concerns, two suspicious activities, a fire department assist, a 911 hang up call, and a reported DUI.

Oxford police investigated three wrecks, issued 52 traffic citations and made four arrests on the following charges:
(2) Public intoxication
Speeding, no driver’s license and expired tag
Noise violation and possession of drug paraphernalia

Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department responded to the following incidents: seven disturbances, four transports, three service calls, two animal complaints, an alarm, a domestic violence, a petit larceny, a harassment, a malicious mischief, a scam, a follow-up and a natural cause death.

Lafayette County Sheriff’s Department made two arrests on the following charges:
Commercial burglary
Domestic violence – simple assault

University police responded to the following incidents: three vehicle stops.

Oxford Fire Department responded to the following calls:
Smoke detector activation at 11:48 a.m. on University of Mississippi campus
Fire in the kitchen at 12:49 p.m. at Lexington Point Drive
