There are cars rolling along Mississippi highways with bumper stickers that read: “Swag for Heisman.”

That’s a nickname for Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly. An argument can be made for or against Kelly’s chances, though not much improvement is needed from 2015 to make those chances pretty darn good.

The last time the Rebels had a legitimate Heisman candidate to push, those bumper stickers read: “Deuce for Heisman.”

If Kelly and Deuce McAllister were able to play on the 2016 team, two individual award hopefuls would have made one heck of a combo for a team already expected to make national noise.

The Rebels’ offense is clearly in great hands with Kelly, who led the SEC in passing and set or tied 14 school records last season. His receivers are too many to count, and if his line passes early tests against Florida State, Georgia and Alabama, the Ole Miss offense is going to be a problem.

Colby Bortles to Compete in College Home Run Derby

Ole Miss third baseman Colby Bortles has been invited to compete in the seventh annual TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby. Bortles will join some of college baseball’s best sluggers at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska Sunday, July 3 at 7:30 p.m. CT. The event will be broadcast live on ESPN2.

Eight contestants will swing for the fences in hopes of claiming the 2016 College Home Run Derby crown. Joining Bortles will be: Dylan Busby (Florida State), Greg Deichmann (LSU), Hagen Owenby (East Tennessee State), Brent Rooker (Mississippi State), Reid Russell (Lamar), Gary Russo (Miami OH) and one player to be determined.

Bortles will become the second Rebel to participate in the College Home Run Derby over the past three years. When the Rebels made their run to the College World Series in 2014, Sikes Orvis was one of the event’s competitors.

In his third season at Ole Miss, Bortles put together a solid junior campaign while manning the hot corner. He was one of three Rebels to start all 62 games this season, making 61 starts at third base and one at first base. Bortles proved his power at the plate by leading Ole Miss in doubles with 21, ranking second among SEC hitters and tying for the fifth most in Ole Miss history. The slugger ranked second on the team with eight home runs and recorded 50 RBI to go along with a .475 slugging percentage. He finished the season on a tear, earning a spot on the NCAA Oxford Regional All-Tournament team and SEC All-Tournament team.

Throughout his collegiate career, Bortles has belted 17 home runs. The Oviedo, Florida also has three career grand slams to his credit, including a memorable game-tying blast versus No. 1 Vanderbilt in 2015 (April 10). Trailing by four in the top of the ninth, Ole Miss loaded the bases for Bortles. With one swing of the bat, the third baseman tied the game with a towering shot over the big left field wall at Hawkins Field. The Rebels went on to win the 16-inning marathon, 6-5, before claiming the series over the defending national champions with a victory in the weekend finale.

Ole Miss hitting coach Mike Clement will join Bortles in Omaha, serving as his pitcher.
