This Week’s Art and Entertainment Bring Oxford Writes, Art Crawl and Leap Frog’s Firework Bash

Summertime is in full swing within Oxford as the locals enjoy numerous art and sports camps within the city and on University of Mississippi campus. This week promises a good time for all from Oxford Writes to the monthly Art Crawl to the new weekly poetry readings at Mugg Cakes.

Held at The Shelter on Van Buren from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., there is no need to register for a spot at Oxford Writes’ second gathering. Oxford author David Waddell will discuss his books and his experiences publishing his work. Oxford musician and songwriter David Vicchiollo will share his insight and experiences in songwriting. He will also play his music that night.

YAC’s monthly Oxford Art Crawl features rides on the iconic Double Decker bus to art exhibits around Oxford and Ole Miss.

The monthly Art Crawl returns this Tuesday from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The tour begins at the Powerhouse where the attendees can grab a snack and a drink before climbing on a Double Decker bus to tour Gallery 130, High Point Coffee on the Square, The Shelter on Van Buren, Southside Gallery and The Edison which is featuring a pop-up show by North Light Gallery.

The June show in the Powerhouse Gallery Series is Houses for Houses, a fundraiser show for Oxford-Lafayette Habitat for Humanity. Local artists have created a variety of birdhouses, and the proceeds from the sale of these birdhouses will go to benefit Habitat.

Friday, July 1

leapfrog fireworks

This Friday, the after-school program, Leap Frog, will host its annual Fire Cracker Bash at 7:30 p.m. The Lyric. All proceeds from the event will benefit the program, and whoever donates the most money will be crowned Mr. and Mrs. America by Leap Frog.

Fire Cracker Bash tickets are $25 and can be purchased at St. Peters Episcopal Church or at the event’s door.

Poetreats is an eclectic evening of spoken word, acoustic music and cupcakes. Mugg Cakes, located at 68 County Road 334, will host Poetreats every Friday from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Doors open at 6:45 p.m. for those who want to sign up.

The cover charge is $2 and $5 for those who want a standard cupcake by Mugg Cakes.
