Perfect Game Names J.B. Woodman Second Team All-American
As a second round draft pick of the Toronto Blue Jays, J.B. Woodman has already started his professional baseball career. However, that hasn’t stopped the former Rebel from earning more accolades after his successful 2016 college baseball season. Perfect Game/Rawlings named Woodman a Second Team All-American Monday morning (June 27), the second All-American honor of the season for the center fielder.
As the 23rd All-American in Ole Miss Baseball history, Woodman also collected All-America Second Team honors from Baseball America (June 7). The Orlando, Florida native is the 13th Rebel to become an All-American during the Mike Bianco era (16 seasons).
Woodman led the SEC with 14 home runs in 2016, the first Rebel to lead the conference in homers since Mark Barnthouse in 1977. Woodman also paced Ole Miss in runs scored (53), RBI (55) and slugging percentage (.578), cracking the SEC’s top 10 in all three categories. Woodman finished his final collegiate season with 25 multi-hit games and 14 multi-RBI games to go along with a .323 batting average.
Along with collecting All-SEC honors, Woodman made the SEC All-Defensive Team. His nine outfield assists led all conference outfielders and ranked third in the country. Seven of his nine outfield assists occurred at the plate to keep runs off the board. Woodman also proved to be a threat on the base path, stealing a team-high 12 bases.
Woodman was one of three Rebels to start all 62 games. As a team captain, Woodman led the Rebels on and off the field. On the diamond, he helped guide Ole Miss to a 43-19 record that included the Rebels hosting an NCAA Regional.
After being selected with the 57th overall pick in the 2016 MLB Draft, Woodman signed with the Blue Jays and reported to the Vancouver Canadians, the club’s Class A short season club. He has played in six games thus far, recording four hits, three runs and two RBI.
