Little Free Libraries Positively Welcome in Price Hill Park, Stone Center Park
Oxford is a well-known literature scene, thanks to its native son William Faulkner, and now it has further implemented its status with addition of two new Little Free Libraries in the Stone Center Park and the Price Hill Park.
The Round Table Book Club, with the support of Oxford Parks Commission, donated the Little Free Library at Stone Center Park, located at 423 Washington Avenue. Brenda West, member of the Round Table Book Club, said that her daughter, Michele West Stubor, painted the book stand as a floral-decorated yellow house with a shingle roof. The Round Table Book Club cut the ribbon on the LFL at 10:00 a.m. on June 1, and then joined the Woman’s Book Club at Price Hill Park located off Price Hill Road.
The Round Table Book Club provided lemonade and widely-popular homemade cookies that the children of the Price Hill Park enjoyed. Oxford musician Silas Reed played as the children cut a red ribbon of the new Little Free Library as the retired schoolteacher Margaret Gipson snapped pictures on her iPhone. Gipson joined Oxford Alderman Preston Taylor to help the Woman’s Book Club bring a Little Free Library to the Price Hill Park.
Commenting on the impact the free books would have on the children retaining their education during summertime, Gipson said, “We thank you all for the opportunity for us to work with our children in the parks.”
Painted by Claire Whitehurst, the Little Free Library in Price Hill Park is already flush with books, some put in by the book clubs and some put in by the children themselves.
Julie Chadwick of Woman’s Book Club invited Oxford author Allison Estes to read Izzy and Oscar to the children at Price Hill Park. Estes and the children talked about the octopus and strange pets one could keep – quickly
All in all, the two book clubs enjoyed the bright Wednesday morning with the children as they celebrated their shared love of reading.
