Northwest’s Jamell Newson Signs with Delta State Baseball
Northwest sophomore outfielder Jamell Newson will continue his collegiate baseball career at Delta State University, signing a national letter of intent with the Statesmen on Wednesday.
“I’m really excited about joining the DSU program next year,” Newson said. “I feel like I can contribute both at the plate and in the outfield and I feel like my game has gotten a lot better in my two years at Northwest. I’m just looking to help the Statesmen any way I can.”
Newson started in 92 career contests in the outfield for Northwest and was a .268 lifetime hitter, collecting 17 doubles, six triples, a home run and 42 RBIs. The Senatobia native also drew a school-record 75 career walks, stole 32 bases and fielded .960 in 199 career chances.
A product of Magnolia Heights, Newson played on three MAIS state championship teams for Chris McMinn and the Chiefs. He ended his senior season hitting .472 with six doubles, six triples, two home runs and 28 RBIs and added 35 stolen bases en route to MAIS Most Valuable Player honors. He was also an MAIS Fab 15 Senior and Second Team All-State selection by The Clarion-Ledger.
Newson is the sixth Ranger from this year’s class to ink with a four-year school along with LeeMarcus Boyd (USM), Colt Smith (USM), Peyton Plumlee (Mississippi State), Hunter Lacefield (Mississippi College) and Hunter Wilson (Mississippi College).
