McGuigan Punches Ticket to Eugene on Day One of NCAA East Prelims

Ole Miss came out strong on the first day of the 2016 NCAA Track & Field East Preliminary, producing one NCAA Championships qualifier, one school record and eight athletes who advanced through to quarterfinals at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida.

The NCAA East Preliminary includes the top 48 athletes in each individual event and top 24 relays from the eastern half of the United States. They are all competing for the top 12 spots in each event in Jacksonville that will advance them to the June 8-11 NCAA Championships in Eugene, Oregon.

Dempsey McGuigan, a sophomore from London, U.K., was the first Rebel to punch his ticket to Eugene when he placed second among 48 men in the hammer throw. His mark of 69.04m/226-6 was just off his school record of 69.90m/229-4 and a full 15 feet farther than his performance in this meet last year when he finished 13th, one spot out of a trip to Eugene.

McGuigan is the first man in Ole Miss history to advance to the NCAA Championships in the hammer throw.

Junior Wesley Gallagher came agonizingly close to joining McGuigan on the Rebels’ travel party for Eugene as he placed 13th in the 10,000 meters in 30:07.59. The top 12 finishers earned a berth to the national meet, and Gallagher was just 2 seconds behind the 12th-place man.

A total of eight Rebels (five men, three women) advanced through Thursday’s 48-athlete preliminaries and into 24-athlete quarterfinals of various races.

In the men’s 1500 meters, junior Trevor Gilley (3:45.74), sophomore Craig Engels (3:48.60) and junior Robert Domanic (3:48.75) all made it through to the next round. Gilley made it through on time, while Engels and Domanic automatically qualified by placing top five (second and fourth, respectively) in their heat.

The men’s 800 meters saw a pair of Rebel seniors, Dameon Morgan and Holland Sherrer, advance to the quarterfinals. With the top three from each heat automatically moving forward, Morgan was runner-up in his heat and Sherrer was third.

Senior Britt Ummels broke her own school record in the 1500 meters to advance through to the quarterfinals. Her time of 4:19.21, ninth-fastest on the day, bettered her previous school record of 4:21.63 from last month’s Virginia Challenge. Her twin sister, Bo Ummels, just barely missed a spot in the quarterfinals with her time of 4:24.29 that was 1.25 seconds from qualifying.

Both Ole Miss women in the 100 meters advanced through to the quarterfinals. Senior Khadijah Suleman finished third in a lightning-fast heat and ran the sixth-fastest time of the prelims, 11.42. Sophomore Shannon Ray advanced on time in 11.67.

Ole Miss sent a school-record 32 athletes for a school-record 33 entries into the preliminary round of the championships this week, giving the Rebels many more chances to qualify for the national meet on Friday and Saturday.

Ole Miss’ Hartono into the Third Round of NCAA Singles

Ole Miss women’s tennis has back-to-back All-Americans, as sophomore Arianne Hartono rallied to a win a three-setter against Texas A&M’s Saska Gavrilovska Thursday to reach the round of 16 at the NCAA Singles Championship and become the 12th All-American in program history.

Hartono rallied to beat Gavrilovska 3-6, 7-6(5), 6-1 at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. She will face No. 2 seed Danielle Collins of Virginia in the third round Friday at 10 a.m.

Gavrilovska won a no-ad point to break Hartono and take a 4-2 lead in the opening set. Both players held serve for the remainder of the frame as Gavrilovska, ranked No. 24 in the nation, went on to win 6-3.

Both players struggled to hold serve in the second set. Hartono was the first to hold and then broke Gavrilovska once again to go up, 4-2. Gavrilovska, however, would win the next three games to go up 5-4. Hartono broke back for 5-5, but Gavrilovska won a no-ad point to break Hartono and go up 6-5. Gavrilovska, who entered the match 17-1 this season when winning the first set, served for the match, but Hartono broke for the fifth time in the frame to tie the score at 6-6 and force a tiebreaker.

Gavrilovska won the first two points to take a 2-0 lead in the tiebreaker, but Hartono won the next two points to tie the score. Gavrilovska then built a 4-2 lead, but Hartono countered by winning three consecutive points to take her first lead, 5-4. Gavrilovska tied the score at 5-5, but Hartono went on to win the next two points to take the tiebreaker, 7-5, and force a third set.

Hartono raced to a 5-0 third-set lead and went on to win the final set, 6-1 to advance to the third round.

Later in the afternoon, Hartono teamed up with senior Mai El Kamash in the doubles first round against No. 4 ranked Maegan Manasse and Denise Starr of California. The Rebels raced through the first set 6-2, but Cal got the first break of the second set and went on to win it 6-1. In the NCAA Championships, they are playing supertiebreakers for the third set. Hartono and El Kamash led 5-3, but the Cal duo won two straight to tie at 5-5. After both teams traded points for 8-8, Cal won the final two to take it 10-8 and advance to the second round.

Notables…
• Hartono improved to 22-13 on the year.
• Hartono avenged a 6-2, 6-1 regular-season loss to Gavrilovska in the Southeastern Conference dual match on March 13 in College Station.
• Ole Miss has All-Americans in consecutive seasons for the first time since Mira Radu earned the honor in 2002 and 2003.
• Hartono and El Kamash finished the year 14-13.

Amit Tailor Joins Ole Miss Women’s Basketball Staff

Head coach Matt Insell announced the addition of Amit Tailor to the women’s basketball coaching staff. Tailor comes to Oxford and Ole Miss from Santa Clara University where he served as the men’s video coordinator.

“I couldn’t be happier to have Amit joining our program,” said head coach Matt Insell.  “He has a vast amount of experience in film and analytic breakdown which is something we are looking forward to using to push our program to the next level. On top of that, Amit is a perfect fit for our staff and is someone that I am very thankful to have joining the Rebel Nation.”

Prior to his appointment at Ole Miss, Tailor was the men’s basketball video coordinator for the Broncos for the 2015-16 season. He did extensive film breakdown and statistical analysis for the men’s team

Tailor has extensive experience with advanced statistical data, beginning at the University of Florida where he was an assistant video coordinator from 2013 through 2015. USA Basketball brought on Tailor to work with its U19 and Pan AM teams in 2015 after serving as a member of the U18 Men’s National Team support staff in 2014. Tailor also served as a support staff member during the Nike Hoop Summit in Portland, Oregon in April. Tailor has also worked in the NBA with the New York Knicks and Chicago Bulls.

The Rebels will next hit the hardwood in August when they travel to Costa Rica from Aug. 1-10. Ole Miss will play three exhibition games during its time south of the border.

Ole Miss Volleyball Announces Three Summer Camp Sessions

As the official start of summer approaches, Ole Miss volleyball announced three sessions of summer camp for the month of July.

The first session (July 9-10) is a position camp for ages 14-18. It’s intended for players who want to improve in key areas that are specific to their game. Players will spend time in position-specific training, team training and competition sessions.  Individual techniques and game tactics will be covered in a competitive environment.

Designed with the younger player in mind the Lil Rebel Day Camp July 11-14 is open to boys and girls ages 8-13. Campers will learn the basic fundamentals, using drills and games that allow players to learn, while feeling the excitement of being successful volleyball players.

For those players who want to improve in key areas, volleyball offers the Ole Miss Skills Camp July 14-18. Players will spend time in position-specific training, team training and competition sessions.

Due to the renovation of the Gillom Sports Center and limited court space, each of the 2016 camps will be limited to 50 participants.

Rebels’ J.B. Woodman Shining in SEC Spotlight

Time and time again, centerfielder J.B. Woodman has proven he’s not afraid to step out front and lead the Rebels’ offense in what is arguably the toughest conference in the nation. He continues to dominate at the plate and in the field and is a huge reason why the Rebels are undefeated in the SEC Tournament–as well as in the hunt for a top-8 national seed in the NCAA tournament.

And it’s not just Woodman’s teammates and coaches who have taken note of his performance so far in this year’s SEC Baseball Tournament; opposing teams have been impressed with how the junior from Orlando, Florida has handled himself each time he has stepped up to the plate.

In Tuesday’s opening round, Woodman went 2-for-3 against Georgia’s bullpen, nailing a two-run triple (first triple of the season) and an RBI double. Then on Wednesday in the first inning against second-seeded South Carolina, Woodman recorded his 14^th double of the season. He leads the team with 53 RBIs this year.

Woodman, a 2016 All SEC First-Team and All SEC Defensive Team player, was 2-for-2 at bat against the Gamecocks. Players and coaches from South Carolina and Georgia offered their opinions of Woodman’s performance thus far in the tournament after Ole Miss defeated the two teams to make its way into Thursday’s game against No. 6 seed Vanderbilt.
