Ole Miss Alumna Hosts Interactive Pony Camp at Splinter Creek Ranch

Recent Ole Miss graduate, Ruby Reithel, will host Pony Camp for Ruby’s Riders this summer at the Splinter Creek Ranch between Oxford and Taylor, Mississippi.

Three camps, Beginner Camp A, B and C, will start in May. Beginner Camp Session A, which is currently full, will be May 26 and 27; Session B will be June 9 and 10; Session C will be June 16 and 17. Children ages five and up can attend each camp.

“We decided to have this camp. We have done them four years in a row now,” said Reithel, who has rode horses her entire life. “It’s a good way to introduce kids not only to riding, but getting more familiar with horses. It’s good for little kids who might have already expressed an interest in horses and meet them in real life and get to know the basics.”

Attendees will spend four hours each day learning the basics of horse grooming and riding, learning how to act around horses, playing games, a riding session (including bareback riding). Reithel said the cost to attend the camp is $175, and the kids will learn a lot about horses.

“The kids can attend all three camps,” Reithel said. “We also have an intermediate camp session for ages eight and up.”

According to Reithel, the intermediate sessions are for those that may already be taking riding lessons or have grown up around horses. “They will get hands-on and a bit more riding experience, a jumping demo, intro to western riding and barrel racing 101.”

The intermediate camps are scheduled for May 30 until June 1 and June 6 until 8.

Reithel graduated Ole Miss in May of 2016 with a degree in psychology and plans to further her education at Ole Miss soon. As someone who has rode horses her entire life and grew up in Oxford, Reithel plans to bring equine therapy to the community. Equin therapy is a range of treatments of activities with horses to promote healthy growth for those with ADHD, anxiety, autism, dementia, depression, developmental delayed to name a few.
