Thornberry Tied for Lead Among Individuals at NCAA Regional
Ole Miss freshman Braden Thornberry turned in an even- par 72 in the opening round of the Tuscaloosa Regional at the NCAA Men’s Golf Championships hosted by the University of Alabama Monday.
Thornberry birdied the 592-yard, par 5 seventh hole and finished the front nine at even par at the 7,514-yard Ol’ Colony Grove Complex. The Southaven, Mississippi native carded nine-straight pars on the back nine to finish the day and is tied for 13th overall with Charlotte’s Seth Gandy as the top individual competitor. Five teams from each regional and one individual not on those teams will advance to the NCAA Championships, which will take place May 27-June 1 at the Eugene Country Club in Eugene, Oregon.
“Braden played a really clean solid round of golf today,” said Rebel head coach Chris Malloy. “He gave himself plenty of looks at birdie but didn’t seem to make many. He also scrambled very well when he did get in trouble. I look for him to have two more solid rounds and give himself a chance to win this thing.”
The second round of the NCAA Tuscaloosa Regional continues tomorrow with Thornberry slated to tee off at 10:34 a.m.CST. Fans can follow live stats from the Tuscaloosa Regional at OleMissSports.com orGolfSta
