Neely-Dorsey: Hug a Tree Today!
May 16 is National “Love a Tree Day!”
On this day, trees are celebrated and recognized for the wonderful gift that they are to us and the gifts that they give to us
In the South, we certainly love our trees! In Mississippi, we especially love our magnolias. The magnolia is Mississippi’s state tree and the state flower.
The Magnolia grandiflora, commonly known as the southern magnolia or bull bay is native to the southeastern United States. Reaching 90 feet in height, it is a large striking evergreen tree with large dark green leaves and large white fragrant flowers.
There are many varieties of the magnolia throughout Asia and the Americas. Although it is one of the oldest plants in existence, it wasn’t called the magnolia until the 18th century. Long used for medicinal as well as ornamental purposes, the magnolia is now one of the most popular trees in the world.
Patricia Neely-Dorsey is the author of two books of poetry, Reflections of a Mississippi Magnolia-A Life In Poems and My Magnolia Memories and Musings-In Poems. Through her poems, the author hopes to protect, preserve and promote the rich cultural history and heritage of her state and region along with providing more positive images than all of the negative images usually portrayed. Patricia lives in Tupelo with her husband James, son Henry and Miniature Schnauzer, Happy. The author has been named a Goodwill Ambassador for the state by Governor Phil Bryant. Her slogan is “Always, Always Celebrating the South and Promoting a Positive Mississippi ” Her website is patricianeelydorsey.com and her email is magnoliagirl21@yahoo.com.
