One Oxford High School senior shines brightly among Mississippi high school seniors because of her academic achievements: senior Kayla Owens has been named a STAR (Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition) Student for the 2015-2016 school year by the Mississippi Economic Council’s (MEC) M. B. Swayze Foundation, sponsor of the STAR Program.
STAR Students are selected on the basis of academic excellence. Both American College Test (ACT) scores and scholastic averages are compared to determine the school’s STAR Student.
“Kayla is a model student in every sense of the word,” said Oxford High School Principal Bradley Roberson. “We are fortunate to have her representing Oxford High School. She will do great things in years to come.”
The STAR Program encourages and promotes academic achievement among Mississippi’s high school seniors.
Each STAR Student is asked to designate a STAR Teacher, a teacher who has made the greatest contribution to the student’s scholastic achievement. Owens designated Oxford High School teacher Jim Reidy as her STAR Teacher. He has taught for 26 years total with 23 of those years dedicated to Oxford High School. Reidy, who teaches AP Chemistry and AP Physics at Oxford High School, has been chosen as a STAR Teacher 11 times.
Over 500 STAR Students and STAR Teachers received recognition from MEC’s Swayze Foundation.
