Derby Day Delights, 10 Minute Plays and More This Week in Oxford

For 17 years, Theatre Oxford has hosted a national contest for writers of 10-minute plays. Tomorrow at 7 p.m. at the Powerhouse Arts Community Center, a panel of judges will determine the L.W. Thomas Grand Prize winner and the audience will choose its Audience Award Winner from six finalists. This event is free of charge to attend.

Thursday, May 5

The VOX PRESS Artists Series presents “Gravesend: An Evening of Fiction with William Boyle” at High Point Coffee on Thursday, May 5 on the Square. Event starts at 7:00 p.m. The event features a reading and interview session with the writer. The event is free and open to the public.

William Boyle is from Gravesend, Brooklyn and now lives in Oxford, Mississippi. His novel Gravesend, was translated into French and published by Francois Guerif. Boyle is also the author of a collection of stories Death Don’t have no Mercy, by Broken River Books.

Glimpse Entertainment will present a play, “The Goat or Who Is Sylvia?” beginning at 7 p.m. on May 6 through to Sunday, May 8 at the Old Armory Pavilion.

Directed by Jerry McCalpin, the play is the winner of 2002 Tony Award for Best Play. It has received reviews from The New York Times to Seattle Times, all hailing it as “challenging and outrageously funny” and “the edgiest, most fervently debated Broadway play of 2002…”

Saturday, May 7

The monthly Makers’ Market returns to the Courthouse lawn this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. According to the organizers, there will be 40 vendors with the “largest Children’s Market Area ever with help from the children of Magnolia Montessori School.”

VOX Press is presenting “Derby Day Delights” at Shelter on Van Buren from 8 p.m. to midnight. There will be a vintage Burlesque show by Bijou Bellaroux with private poetry readings and jazz by Skid Rouges. The entree is $12 with a $5 token with a ticket. Mint Juleps will be served at $5 apiece.
