Alpha Tau Omega Teams Up with Coach Freeze for Charity

Alpha Tau Omega’s Delta Psi chapter at University of Mississippi is teaming up with Hugh and Jill Freeze’s foundation to host a 5K on Sunday, May 1, on the university campus to benefit the Palmer Home for Children.

The men of Alpha Tau Omega are excited to be the first to work with Coach Hugh Freeze and the Freeze Foundation for their new philanthropy event this year. On Sunday, May 1, they will be hosting a 5K in the Grove to raise money for the Palmer Home for Children located in Hernando, Mississippi, one of many children homes supported by the Freeze Foundation.

Andrew Glaze, Alpha Tau Omega’s head philanthropy chairman, reached out to Coach Freeze about partnering up to raise money to benefit a children’s home more local in Mississippi.

Glaze said, “It’s actually a pretty funny story. I was sitting at my house while I was sick over Christmas break and I saw Coach Freeze tweet something about his foundation and how it had just gotten started. Chance Pickering actually set me up with someone that could get me in contact with Coach Freeze. So, I shot Coach Freeze an email and he said yes. We’ve been working together ever since January.”

The Freeze Foundation was officially started in 2014 and focuses on expressing God’s love by helping children in need around the world. When the opportunity was presented to support a children’s home in his home state of Mississippi, coach Freeze could not turn down the offer.

“Our heart is kids that are in need and to share God’s love. We’ve been able to do that in a lot of places but it is time that we do something locally, and I was honored when they came and said ‘Hey let’s partner together,’” Freeze said.

The children of the Palmer Home for Children came to watch the Ole Miss football team practice as part of the Freeze Foundation charity.

In their short time working together, Coach Freeze and the men of Alpha Tau Omega have already brought the kids of the Palmer Home for Children to Oxford to watch the Ole Miss football team practice.

“It’s neat to show that it’s not just another Greek philanthropy where the fraternity is just writing a check. We are trying to make personal impacts to the lives of these children,” Glaze said.

The 5K will also allow members of Greek life, citizens of Oxford and residents of surrounding areas to join and participate in the event. Tickets are $25 for the general public and $10 for Ole Miss students.

Chance Pickering, Alpha Tau Omega’s assistant philanthropy chairman, helped Glaze plan an event this year that would invite more of the Oxford community to participate in.

“This year we’re really looking to incorporate more of the Oxford community as well as the Greek life student body. That’s one of the reasons we chose to do a 5K this year is because we think we can get more people from the surrounding areas to come and participate,” Pickering said.
