RebelWell will continue its “LOU On the Move” community fitness pop-up series by hosting men’s yoga on Saturday, April 16.

RebelWell, a wellness program designed to help the Oxford community become more active and healthier, will partner with Southern Star Yoga to help residents stretch out tired and tight muscles. The fitness pop-up is free to all, and will begin at 8:30 a.m. at the City Pavilion located on the corner of University Avenue and Bramlett Boulevard.

Wendy Carmean, the RebelWell project coordinator, said that the program started these pop-up community events when it learned that the cost of exercising along with intimidation was holding residents back from leading a healthier lifestyle.

We wanted to help overcome those barriers and give folks in our community the opportunity to try new exercises,” Carmean said.

RebelWell’s “LOU On the Move” program allows Oxford residents to try an array of exercises to help find what works best for them without having to pay for a gym or studio membership. The series includes Zumba, High-Intensity Interval Training or HIIT and yoga.

Saturday’s pop-up, taught by Jeff New, will help residents unwind, relax and stretch out tight legs, backs and shoulders from a long work week. Although anyone is welcome, this pop-up is specifically geared towards men, who might be a little less familiar with yoga.

Men seem a little unsure of the benefits when actually men can greatly benefit from a yoga practice,” Carmean said. “We wanted men to be able to try yoga even if they aren’t comfortable visiting a studio yet.”

New, who first came to Southern Star Yoga to find an alternative way to stay fit, never intended to teach yoga.

I took my 200-hour teacher training to learn more and expand my yoga practice,” New said. “I have some experience in personal training, so when they asked me to teach, I jumped right in.”

For men who might be apprehensive about trying yoga for the first time, New said that it is an exercise that anyone can participate in.

If you can breathe, you can do yoga,” New said. “It is open to all body types and all levels of ability.”

Stevi Self, co-owner of Southern Star Yoga, said that they are thrilled to partner with RebelWell to promote healthy choices in Oxford.

These RebelWell events are a great way to meet other like-minded people in the community,” Self said. “Surrounding yourself with others who consider their health a priority makes it easier to stay on track.”

New hopes to expose more people to yoga through teaching these fitness pop-ups.

“Hopefully, people will see what a beneficial practice it is and not just the physical aspects, but the restorative and relaxation aspects as well,” New said.

The Saturday pop-up series will continue throughout the summer. For more information regarding RebelWell or upcoming pop-up events visit their website rebelwell.olemiss.edu or Facebook page.
