Mugg Cakes Serves Beer-Battered Cupcakes at Miss-I-Sippin’

Karrian Brown wanted to provide Oxford with something that would last long after she was gone… something that wouldn’t be here only for today, but also for tomorrow. With a lot of love and magic in the mix, Mugg Cakes was born.

“Some people ask, ‘is it just a hobby?’,” Brown said. “No. For me, it’s finding my niche. Finding my niche is like finding my next meal. It’s essential.”

After starting her business in 2015, Brown wanted to break away from the traditional cupcakes and experiment with her skills as a designer. Although she creates several cupcakes outside of coffee mugs, her children loved the cupcakes in a mug more than anything she made.

Always looking for new ideas, Brown was challenged by YAC director Wayne Brown to create a beer–battered cupcake for this year’s Miss-I-Sippin’.

“They thought it would be a great opportunity for me to get in on it, and I totally agreed,” Brown said.

Brown will have three choices of beer-battered cupcakes sponsored by Yalobusha Brewery at the event.

“Everyday it’s a surprise,” Brown said. “I never know what opportunity is going to jump out at me. I’m approached by so many different walks of life, the beer project, for example.”

Brown bakes each cupcakes or mug cake from scratch with selected high quality ingredients and farm fresh products. The cupcakes are sold by the dozen, and can be bought with or without a coffee mug.

“With us being a specialty cupcake brand, it’s like okay, I have got to put what I have as a designer and create something really great,” Brown said. “I’m excited, but I’m nervous because some people ask for really extravagant things. It’s always a challenge.”

Mugg Cakes delivers within city limits. Anyone outside of city limits is charged a delivery fee.

“We want to become a home name here in Oxford,” Brown said. “I hope Oxford loves it as much as we do.”
