Founded in 1960, the Hearst Journalism Awards Program provides support and encouragement to journalism students in colleges and universities. Recently, the program recognized one of University of Mississippi students in its Photo Picture Story/Series Competition: Cady Herring.
Herring is the director of photography for The Ole Miss Yearbook and a junior at Meek School of Journalism and New Media. She was recognized among 20 winners in Hearst’s monthly photojournalism competition for her pictures of Ethiopia, Africa for a multimedia reporting trip that many journalism students went on last year.
“I’m very grateful and proud. It means so much because I’ve been working on this project off and on for over a year, and now I’m starting to see some fruit,” Herring said. “‘The Ole Miss in Africa, Ethiopia on the Rise’ magazine has just recently been released, and its so exciting to see the work in print and be able to really share it with others. That’s what excites me the most about Hearst – I hope that it will help bring attention to, and share the beauty of Ethiopia that I was able to capture.”

Meek School faculty and adviser to the Student Media Center at Ole Miss, Patricia Thompson was the faculty leader on the multimedia reporting project in Ethiopia.
Thompson said, “Cady Herring is one of our most talented students – a gifted photographer and writer who has worked at Student Media since her freshman year. I wasn’t surprised when she won TWO first-place awards in a prestigious regional photo competition last year, and I’m not surprised Hearst is honoring her with national recognition for her work in Ethiopia. I was faculty leader on the multimedia reporting project in Ethiopia last year. Cady took stunning photographs throughout our trip. I am looking forward to continuing to work with her next year, when she will be editor of the 2017 The Ole Miss yearbook.”
The Meek School of Journalism and New Media has helped guide Cady Herring towards her goal: international journalism.
Dean of the Meek School, Dr. Will Norton, said, “Since she was a freshman, Cady Herring has let us know of her interest in international journalism. Thus, when the Meek School did a depth report on Ethiopia, Cady was among the most active writers and photographers. Her work was first class, and she was an inspiration to faculty who watched her enthusiastic coverage in four cities in Ethiopia.”
