Waxhaw, North Carolina is one of the oldest towns in the state and even the country, dating back to the 1700s and officially becoming chartered in 1889.

The Waxhaw was an Indian tribe that inhabited the town hundreds of years ago, and one of the attractions to visit is the Museum of the Waxhaws, located next to the Andrew Jackson birthplace and memorial, another popular attraction.

Along with the town’s history, it also has a rich culture. Main Street is lined with outstanding restaurants and antique shops that can keep the locals busy all day.

Events going on throughout the year include chili cook-offs, parades for all holidays, various art festivals, and antique shows. First Fridays is another event that takes place each month, and is an opportunity for anyone to come out and have a great night on Main Street. Local businesses and restaurants stay open late, and free carriage rides are open to the public.

Each month, the First Friday has a theme, some of which have been art crawls, pumpkin carvings, and live music.

The two most iconic attractions in Waxhaw are the pedestrian bridge and the water tower. Both were built in 1940, and anyone who grew up in Waxhaw can remember playing under the bridge and running around the water tower as a child. The water tower serves as a symbol for the town, and the bridge is where the best views can be seen and scenic pictures can be taken.

In addition to being a charming Southern town, Waxhaw is conveniently located only 20 miles south of Charlotte, North Carolina. Charlotte is the second biggest city in the southeast only behind Jacksonville, Florida.

Charlotte is home of many sports teams including the Carolina Panthers, Charlotte Hornets, Charlotte Knights, and the Carolina Hurricanes. The NASCAR Hall of Fame, and Bank of America are also headquartered in Charlotte, making it a huge tourism and banking region.

Waxhaw has a population of 10,500 and maintains its small town charm while continuing to grow and stay up to date with the 21st century. It is no wonder that the town motto is “proud of our past, passionate about our future.”

Love, Love, LOVE our small town where people still stroll the sidewalks, history is cherished and it has the BEST parades and fireworks.

For the record, the Carolina Hurricanes are in Raleigh not Charlotte.

Also for the record… Would not advise playing under said bridge due to trains using rails under said bridge.
