UPDATE 4:30 p.m.

Urgent: Oxford is under a flash flood watch as the town has already gotten 2.96 inches of rain today. Nearby cities are getting multiple inches of rain as well such as Batesville with 5.26 inches. The threat of more rain and a thunderstorm still linger for Friday and Saturday.

The Yocona River near Oxford, Mississippi, is on the rise due to several inches of rainfall in the area. At 11 a.m. the river stage was at 9.81 feet and quickly rose to 10.44 feet by 3 p.m.

It is currently 63 degrees in Oxford, Mississippi, with a high of 72 and a low of 61. The sky is cloudy with a 100 percent chance of rain this afternoon on through the night, including a possible thunderstorm.

Roads in Oxford are wet, but drivable, unlike many roads across the Mississippi Delta, which are experiencing high flood water due to 7 inches of rain at the least.

According to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), Oxford is in a limited area for flooding, meaning flash flooding possible and 1 to 2 inches of rainfall possible. Greenville, on the other hand, and most of Washington County, is in a extreme flooding area. An extreme flooding area means there is significant flooding with an additional 3 to 5 inches of rainfall.

MEMA posted a message from the Washington County Emergency Management on its Facebook page:

“The city of Greenville and Washington County are asking all residents to stay off the road unless travel is absolutely necessary. Do not drive through flood waters. The wake caused by this is causing additional damage to houses already impacted by flood waters. If you can not get out of your residence and you wish to evacuate, call 911 and you will be evacuated by public safety personnel.”

According to the U.S. National Weather Service in Jackson, rain will continue throughout the weekend. Multiple emergency agencies are urging people to not drive on a road that is flooded and call 911 if you need help.

Pictures and videos are sweeping the internet of flooded water in Greenville, Cleveland and other small Mississippi Delta towns.
