U.S. Senator Trent Lott, an UM alum (BA ’63, JD ’67), signed his second and co-authored book, Crisis Point: Why We Must – and How We Can – Overcome Our Broken Politics in Washington and Across America, at Off Square Books yesterday.

Sen. Trent Lott co-wrote Crisis Point with Sen. Tom Daschle with whom he has always kept a positive working relationship, a rare pairing in today’s entrenched partisan culture. Daschle is a former U.S. Senator and Senate majority leader from South Dakota. Sen. Lott is the junior senator from Mississippi who currently chairs both the Rules and Administration Committee and the Surface Transportation subcommittee as well as the Select Committee on Intelligence and the Finance Committee.

Crisis Point is an offering of advice from the two ideologically-divided yet cordial senators against the polarizing atmosphere in today’s politics. They name the never-ending campaigning, the unprecedented money and the constant news cycle as damaging to the citizens’ faith in the government.

Both have served for their respective parties in the Senate for nearly 60 years; in their service, they have seen Reagan tax cuts, a deadlocked Senate, the Clinton impeachment, 9/11 and the Iraq War.

Yet, today’s political culture is worrying to Sen. Lott and Daschle. They both share personal stories from their own careers as well as events in American history in the book to remind the readers of the value of compromise.

The book can be bought at the Square Books and online from Bloomsbury Publishing.
