“I’ve always been fascinated with small towns,” said Allen Sanders, executive chef and co-owner of Delta Steak Company, who grew up in tiny Arcola, Mississippi, and now feels quite content in his restaurant’s new digs in Abbeville. “The new location has the feeling we were always going for from the beginning.”

Allen’s wife and Delta Steak Company co-owner Erin agrees, saying that she loves the feeling of relaxation that comes over you when you drive into town and step inside the restaurant. “You won’t always find matching chairs or silverware here, but I think that’s part of the charm.”

When the Sanders moved the restaurant to Abbeville eight months ago, not everyone was excited about it. “A lot of people think Abbeville is far away, but it’s really only 10 minutes from Oxford,” said Allen. Now Allen’s response to those who say the drive is to far is, “Just make the drive once.” He says most people end up arriving ahead of their reservations due to the short drive.

As for the Delta Steak Company menu, you can still find the famous steaks and Delta tamales carried over from the Oxford location for dinner, in addition to a new lunch menu offered Tuesday through Saturday. Country breakfast, complete with biscuits, sausage and gravy is served piping hot on Saturday mornings.

D Steak 2“Our lunch chef Adam Tuck creates lunch specials such as hamburger steak, fried catfish and spaghetti, during the week,” says Erin. “One of our best-selling daily lunch items is our Delta Burger topped with pimento cheese and bacon.”

Care for a beverage? Abbeville may be dry, but Delta Steak Company has resort status. “We’re the first establishment in Abbeville to serve alcohol since the 1920s,” says Erin. “And the locals enjoy having somewhere to purchase a glass of wine or beer.”

“We’re so thankful that the community of Abbeville has embraced us,” says Erin. “We’ve been having live blues and country music every other weekend and plan to open a back patio in the spring.” In addition to longtime Oxford customers, new customers have been traveling from as far away as Bruce and Holly Springs, according to Allen. “People told me I was crazy to move the restaurant to Abbeville, but it was the best move I’ve ever made.”
